Woodeco Soap Box is a wonderful piece of design that stands up to answer responsibility challenges and is a trend initiator for the future of useful and decorative products.
We are pleased to present Luin Living’s newest product Woodeco Soap Box! Made in Finland from a combination of wood-base cellulose and recycled plastic. Woodeco Soap Box is a masterpiece of domestic know-how.
“The idea of the soap box started years ago when we developed and introduced natural soaps and a lotion bar in our selection. The ecological and multipurpose lotion and soap bars needed a practical and stylish box in which they could be easily stored and carried on trips. We wanted to design a box that would also be ecological, beautiful, and multipurpose“, say Mari and Noora, the founders of Luin Living.
During the design process, many different materials were tested. “We went through wood materials, porcelain, bamboo, cork and also innovative bio composites. We faced challenges with several materials, as many natural materials are not suitable for regular contacts with water and soap. Fortunately, we finally found a material that was suitable for our needs. The cellulose fibers-reinforced recycled plastic material manufactured in Finland combines natural raw materials and recycled plastic,” Mari continues.
“It’s great to collaborate with Luin Living brand and to see that a truly sustainable recycled material fits for a stylish design product when it comes to technical and functional as well as visual properties. The Fortum Circo® recycled plastic compound used in the soap box is made from plastic packaging collected from households and the material is enriched with softwood cellulose fiber from FSC® and PEFC certified, responsibly grown forests. The material can be customized and colored according to wishes and needs, and at the same time it is a very sustainable material, as the carbon footprint of recycled plastic is only about half of that of virgin plastic. The cellulose fiber added to the compound gives the material a natural feel and it also binds CO2, which reduces the material’s environmental impact even more”, says Anniina Rasmus, Brand Sales Manager of Fortum Circo®.
After finding the right kind of material, the development and design work, which lasted a couple of years, began. “Inspired by the forms of nature, we designed the Woodeco Soap Box to meet criterias specific to our brand; it had to be timelessly beautiful in design, naturally pleasant to the touch, light and durable in use. We wanted the box to also function as a soap tray, so we designed Woodeco in a way that allow both the base and the lid to turn into trays, i.e. in a way, with the 2-in-1 principle. The size of Woodeco is such that it fits many sizes of soap bars. The biggest part of the development process was spent getting the raw material to work perfectly together with water and soap. This required several rounds of tests, in which, among other things, the fineness of the ingredients was changed,” remembers Mari.
The lids of the Woodeco Soap Box, which got its design language from the beauty of our clean forests, are identical, so you can use it as two separate soap trays. There are ridges at the bottom of both trays, reducing the contact of the soap and the box to a minimum and therefore let it dry more easily. The soap box is convenient for traveling and protecting the bar of soap in the shower, and the design of the base keeps the soap dry.
The versatility of our products has always been important to us, and it has also been considered in the design of this product. The soap box also works excellently as a stylish storage box for jewellery, cotton pads, and other small items in the bathroom.
“In order to make the box sufficiently tight, during the development process we had to test different drying times and molds, so that the lids did not bend when drying and the box would stay tightly closed”, says Mari.
“The process was surprisingly long, but it was worth it, because now we are really satisfied with the end result! The Woodeco Soap Box is a truly wonderful piece of design that stands up to answer responsibility challenges and is a trend initiator for the future of useful and decorative products.” Mari rejoices.
